What is PLA?

Polylactic Acid, or PLA, is a thermoplastic polyester made from fermented plant starch like corn, cassava, sugarcane, or sugar beet pulp. But Most PLA is made from corn because corn is one of the cheapest and most available sugars globally.

To make PLA

  • Corn starch is converted into sugar through a mechanical process called wet milling, separating the starch from the kernels. Once the components are separated, acid or enzymes are added to them. And then, they are heated to convert the starch into sugar or dextrose.
  • Next, dextrose is fermented to create lactic acid.
  • The lactic acid then converts to lactide, and these lactide molecules bond to create polymers.
  • The polymerization results in small pieces of raw material polylactic acid plastic, which are converted into an array of PLA plastic products.

Why is PLA popular?

Over the years, PLA-based products are gaining popularity in the food industry.

  • PLA requires 65% less energy to produce than traditional, petroleum-based plastics.
  • It also emits 68% fewer greenhouse gases. They also provide a functional and renewable replacement for plastics.
  • Bio-based, i.e., the materials are derived from renewable agriculture or plants.
  • PLA products are biodegradable. They naturally degrade rather than pile up in landfills.
  • PLA is a thermoplastic, so it’s moldable and malleable when heated to its melting temperature. It can be solidified and injection-molded into various forms making it a terrific option for food packaging and 3D printing.
  • The FDA approves polylactic acid as a Generally Recognized as Safe  polymer and is safe for food contact.

Why should I use PLA packaging for my business?

If you want to be part of the global movement to reduce your carbon footprint and are looking for sustainable options, then PLA products are an excellent option.
